Immonen wins second US Open in a row

US Open 9-Ball Championships 2009Finland's Mika Immonen successfully defended his title by winning the 2009 US Open 9-Ball Championships.

The 2008 champion earned $40,000 by defeating 2002 winner Ralf Souquet (Germany) 13-10 in the final. Souquet earned $15,000.

Donnie Mills was beaten 11-10 by Immonen in the losers' final to finish third. Lee Vann Corteza (Philippines) took fourth.

The Finn had to endure a long run on the losers' side after an early loss. In total he played 15 matches, which is more than any previous champion.

Immonen is only the second player to win back-to-back US Open titles. Nick Varner (USA) accomplished the same feat in 1989-1990.

In addition to his two titles Immonen was also runner-up to Corey Deuel (USA) in the 2001 final.

The two finalists are both in the middle of some impressive streaks. Prior to this event Souquet and Immonen were second and third in the WPA rankings and also held the top two positions in the BCA Points List.

The tournament was played 18-24 October at the Chesapeake Conference Center, in Chesapeake, Virginia, USA. There were 216 entrants in this the 34th edition of the championships.

Second US Open title for Ga-young Kim

Ga-young Kim from South Korea won the 2009 US Open after edging Ireland's Karen Corr 7-5 in the final.

Gerda Hofstätter (Austria) and Allison Fisher (England) finished joint third.

Defending champion Kelly Fisher (England) lost 9-7 to Allison Fisher in the last 16.

This was Kim's second US Open crown and her fourth victory on the WPBA Tour, following wins in the 2004 US Open, the 2005 Cuetec Cues National Championship and the 2007 Carolina Classic. In addition she won the world title in 2005 and 2006.

With this victory Kim is now the sole leader in the rankings. Corr moves from eighth to second. Monica Webb (USA) sits in third place. Kelly Fisher drops from tied first to seventh place.

The event took place from 29 July to 2 August 2009 at the Riverwind Casino, Norman, Oklahoma, USA. It was the third of six events on the 2009 Classic Tour. Next up is the Colorado Classic, at the Sky Ute Casino & Resort, Ignacio, Colorado, USA, 16-20 September 2009.

Immonen wins first US Open title

US Open 9-Ball Championships 2008Finland's Mika Immonen won the 2008 US Open 9-Ball Championships.

The 2001 world champion earned $40,000 by defeating former world 9-ball champion Ronnie Alcano (Philippines) 13-7 in the final. Alcano earned $20,000.

It was sweet revenge for the Finn as Alcano earlier had defeated him 13-7 in the winners' final.

Warren Kiamco was beaten 11-9 by Immonen in the losers' final to finish third. That was worth $10,000 for the Filipino.

Alcano also finished second in last year's event. The winner that time was Shane Van Boening from USA. This time around he was knocked out by countryman Larry Nevel in the earlier rounds.

This was the first US Open title for Immonen. His best previous finish was runner-up to Corey Deuel (USA) in the 2001 final.

With this win Immonen moves from third to second in the BCA Points List. Losing finalist Alcano enters the list at 25th. Previous No.2 Johnny Archer (USA) is the new points leader. Shane Van Boening (USA) drops from first to third.

Immonen sits at No.3 in the first edition of the new WPA rankings. Alcano is in eighth. Ralf Souquet from Germany is the leader, followed by Daryl Peach (England).

The tournament was played 19-25 October at the Chesapeake Conference Center, in Chesapeake, Virginia, USA. There were 238 entrants in this the 33rd edition of the championships.

Kelly Fisher captures maiden US Open title

2008 WBPA US OpenEngland's Kelly Fisher avenged last year's final loss and won her first WPBA US Open title.

In the deciding match she defeated surprise finalist Filipino Iris Ranola 7-1. Jeanette Lee (USA) shared third place with Yu Ram Cha (South Korea).

Kelly Fisher took away $15,000 for first place. Ranola won $9,000 for her runner-up position.

This was Kelly's first US Open trophy. It was also her first Classic Tour victory of the season and fourth of her career. Her three previous wins all came in the San Diego Classic.

Allison Fisher (England) came into the event as the three-time defending champion. This year was a completely different story though as she went out early after losing her first two matches.

The win puts Kelly atop the WPBA rankings. She started the week at No.5. Karen Corr (Ireland) is still in second place and Xiaoting Pan (China) drops from shared second to third. Allison Fisher drops all the way from first to sixth.

The event took place from July 1 to August 3 in the Riverwind Casino, Norman, Oklahoma, USA. It was the fourth of seven this season on the Classic Tour. Next up is the Carolina Classic, September 10-14, in Durham, North Carolina.

Pan and Jones on top in GenerationPool.com 9-Ball Championships

Xiaoting Pan (China) and Jeremy Jones (USA) captured the GenerationPool.com 9-ball Championships.

In the finals Pan defeated Ga Young Kim (South Korea) 7-4. Jones beat his friend and rival Ronnie Wiseman (USA) by the same score.

The winners both received $15,000, while the runner-ups won $9,000.

In the women's division 2006 champion Jasmin Ouschan (Austria) and Anna Kostanian (USA) shared third. 2000 champion Johnny Archer and fellow American Shawn Putman took the same positions among the men.

Neither Pan nor Jones had won the title before. Jones was runner-up in 1999.

The defending champions had a tough time this time around. Karen Corr (Ireland) lost to Pan in the quarter-finals and Shane Van Boening went out to Robb Saez (USA) in the early rounds.

With this win Pan advanced from 9th to third in the WPBA Rankings. Kim improved from third to second. Allison Fisher (England) is still in front.

The event took place June 8-12, 2008 at the Charlotte Convention Center, Charlotte, North Carolina, USA. The tournament was previously known as the EnjoyPool.com 9-ball Championships and before that the BCA Open 9-ball Championships.

Shane Van Boening wins first US Open title

US Open 2007Shane Van Boening from the United States won the US Open.

He earned $50,000 by defeating reigning world 9-ball champion Ronnie Alcano 13-10 in the final. Alcano earned $25,000. Surprise package Tomoki Mekari from Japan got $10,000 for third.

Defending champion John Schmidt (USA) had a disappointing tournament, ending up in 65th place.

Van Boening went undefeated in the tournament with some excellent play. For instance he played flawless pool in the 9-4 victory over Alcano in the winners bracket, maybe making one lose safety. He received a standing ovation from the crowd afterwards.

This win crowned an impressive season for the 24-year old Van Boening. He also won the World 10-ball Championship and finished second in the EnjoyPool.com 9-Ball Championship. The victory secured him a place on the US Mosconi Cup team.

The tournament was played 14-20 October at the Chesapeake Conference Center, in Chesapeake, Virginia, USA.

Allison Fisher takes third US Open in a row

WBPA US OpenAllison Fisher won the WPBA US Open for the third time in a row.

In the final she defeated fellow Englishwoman Kelly Fisher 7-6. Last year's runner-up Kim Shaw (England) shared third place with Ga Young Kim (South Korea).

This was Allison's fifth US Open trophy. She also won in 1999. It was her third Classic Tour victory of the season and 50th of her career.

The win solidifies her position on top of the WPBA rankings. Karen Corr (Ireland) is still in second place and Xiaoting Pan (China) stays in third.

The event took place from August 1-5 in the Twin River Casino, Lincoln, Rhode Island. It was the sixth event of eight this season on the Classic Tour. Next up is the Midwest Classic, October 3-7, in Norman, Oklahoma.

Orcollo and Corr on top in EnjoyPool.com 9-Ball Championships

Dennis Orcollo (Philippines) and Karen Corr (Ireland) won the men's and women's division in the EnjoyPool.com 9-ball Championships. The event was formerly known as BCA Open.

In the finals Orcollo whitewashed USA's Shane Van Boening 7-0. Corr beat long-time rival Allison Fisher (England) 7-4. This was Orcollo's first victory in the event. Corr has three previous wins.

The winners both received $15,000, while the runner-ups won $9,000.

Mike Davis (USA) and defending champion Jasmin Ouschan (Austria) finished third in their respective divisions.

With this win Corr moved closer to Fisher in the WPBA Rankings. Xiaoting Pan is in third place.

Allison Fisher successfully defends US Open title

Allison Fisher retained the US Open by defeating fellow Englishwoman Kim Shaw 7-5.

This was her second WPBA win of the season and 53rd of her career. The win will solidify her position on top of the WPBA rankings.

Fisher took away $14,000 for first place. Shaw won $8,000 for her runner-up position.

The event took place from October 18-22 in the Sandia Hotel and Casino, Albuquerque, New Mexico.

John Schmidt takes US Open title

Straight pool master John Schmidt won the US Open on home soil. He earned $40,000 by defeating Filipino Rodolfo Luat 11-6 in the final.

2004 winner Gabe Owen (USA) finished in third place. His countryman David Broxson took fourth.

Defending champion Alex Pagulayan (Philippines) went out in the early rounds.

The tournament was played 25 September to October 1 at the Chesapeake Conference Center, in Chesapeake, Virginia.

Before the event John Schmidt was looking for someone to put him in the tournament. I guess he got lucky ...

A number of the top players were absent this time, e.g. Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante from the Philippines. Germany's Ralf Souquet and Thorsten Hohmann were playing in the World Pool League in Poland, along with Dutchamn Niels Feijen and Dennis Orcollo from the Philippines.

Souquet and Ouschan claim top spots in EnjoyPool.com 9-ball Championships

Ralf Souquet (German) and Jasmin Ouschan (Austria) won the men's and women's division in the EnjoyPool.com 9-ball Championships. The event was formerly known as BCA Open.

In the finals Souquet beat Johnny Archer (USA) 7-5. Ouschan beat Allison Fisher (England) by the same score. Archer also finished second in 2005. Fisher was the defending champion. The winners both received $20,000, while the runner-ups won $10,000.

Efren Reyes (Philippines) and Helena Thörnfeldt (Sweden) finished third in their respective divisions. Reyes had an amazing match against American Allen Hopkins in the second round. He managed to come back from 10-1 down to win 11-10! The fact that they were using alternate breaks makes the feat even more incredible.

20-year-old Ouschan has already won many events in her career but this must be considered her definitive breakthrough on the world stage. On her way to the final she beat big names such as Ga-Young Kim (South Korea), Karen Corr (Northern Ireland), Kelly Fisher (England), Gerda Hofstätter (Austria), Shin-Mei Liu (Taiwan) and Thörnfeldt.
