Jozef Philipoom wins first career title in 2009 Hurghada World Cup

Jozef Philipoom (Belgium) won the World Cup event in Hurghada, Egypt.

In a roller-coaster final Philipoom defeated Swedish legend Torbjörn Blomdahl 3-1. The frame scores were 3-15, 15-14, 10-15, 15-11 and 15-0.

Turkey's Tayfun Tasdemir and virtually unknown Ruben Legazpi from Spain lost out in the semifinals.

This was the 45-year-old Belgian's first World Cup title. His previous best was second in Sluiskil earlier this season.

He received €5,500 for the victory and Blomdahl got €3,500 for second place.

Defending champion Daniel Sanchez from Spain lost 2-1 to Legazpi in the quarterfinals.

Sanchez had the highest general average among the 56 competitors with 1.873. His 2.523 was the highest single match average in the final stage. The Spaniard also tied Kyung-Roul Kim (South Korea) and Marco Zanetti (Italy) for highest run with a maximum 15.

Frédéric Caudron's fifth place finish secured his victory in the 2009 World Cup Ranking. Blomdahl and Philipoom moved into a tie for second place, from fourth and seventh place respectively. Last year's winner Dick Jaspers (Netherlands) finished in seventh position.

The win moved Philipoom from 12th to eighth in the World Players Ranking. Blomdahl improved from fourth to second. Caudron is the new leader with former No.1 Jaspers in third.

The event took place 6-12 December 2009 at the Sunrise Garden Beach Resort, Hurghada, Egypt. It was the final of five events in the 2009 World Cup. The next season opens in Antalya, Turkey, 15-21 February 2010.

Sánchez powers to World Cup win in Egypt

Two-time world champion Daniel Sánchez from Spain won the World Cup event in Egypt for his first title of the season.

Sánchez hammered Belgian Eddy Merckx 3-0. The frame scores were 15-1, 15-5 and 15-12. Tying for third were Peter de Bakker (Belgium) and Jean Paul de Bruijn from Netherlands.

Recent world champion Marco Zanetti (Italy) had the highest general average of 1.797 and the highest single match average of 2.600. Andreas Efler (Austia) had the highest run with a perfect 15.

Defending champion Torbjörn Blomdahl (Sweden) lost 3-2 to Jozef Philipoom (Belgium) in the last 16. Tour leader Dick Jaspers from Netherlands also went out in this round, 3-1 to Zanetti.

This was the Spaniard's second win in Egypt. He also captured the title in 2006.

The win takes Sánchez to second place in the World Cup Ranking. Jaspers stays on top and Frédéric Caudron (Belgium) drops one place to third.

Sánchez moves from fourth to second in the World Players Ranking. Merckx improves fom 13th to 10th. Jaspers holds on to the lead and Caudron sits in third place. Blomdahl falls from second to fourth, but is only 18 points behind Sánches.

The event took place 16-22 November 2008 at the Sunrise Garden Beach Resort, Hurghada, Egypt. It was the fifth of six events in the 2008 World Cup. The last event is in Alcala de Guadaira, Spain, 15-21 December.

Blomdahl takes yet another title in Egypt

Three cushion World Cup event in Hurghada, EgyptSweden's Torbjörn Blomdahl won the three cushion World Cup event in Hurghada, Egypt.

In the final he defeated surprise finalist Martin Horn (Germany) 3-1 (0-15, 15-6, 15-10, 15-13).

Dick Jaspers from Netherlands and Frédéric Caudron (Belgium) shared third spot.

Blomdahl is dominating the World Cup at the moment. He has won four out of five events this season and five of the last six overall.

Jaspers' 2.259 was the highest average in the tournament. He also had the highest single match average (3.214!). Caudron had the highest run of 15.

The win further strengthens Blomdahl's lead in the World Cup Ranking. Caudron stays in second. Jaspers stays in third.

Blomdahl also sits atop the World Players Ranking. Caudron rises to second while Daniel Sanchez (Spain) drops to third.

The event took place August 28 - September 1 2007, at the Sunrise Garden Beach Resort, Hurghada, Egypt. It was the fifth event of seven in the 2007 World Cup. The next leg is in Mexico City, Mexico, October 15-21.

Daniel Sanchez wins World Cup in Egypt

Daniel Sanchez from Spain won the 3 cushion World Cup event in Hurghada, Egypt.

In the final he beat Peter de Backer (Belgium) 3-1.

Netherland's Jean Paul de Bruyn occupied third spot and Michael Nilsson from Sweden took fourth.

World champion Frédéric Caudron (also Belgium) had the highest average in the tournament, with 1.879.

The event took place at the Sunrise Garden Resort, Hurghada, Egypt, September 4-9. It was the fourth World Cup event of the year. Only one event remains, in Istanbul Turkey.

The win takes Sanchez to the top of the World Cup ranking. Dick Jaspers (Netherlands) drops to third. Roland Forthomme (Belgium) is in third and Caudron is in fourth.

Sanchez also tops the UMB World Players Ranking. He is followed by Caudron, Jaspers and Blomdahl.
