Ouschan wins sixth gold in European Pool Championships

European Pool Championships 2008Jasmin Ouschan (Austria) was one of many winners in the "All in one" European Pool Championships.

Nobody managed to retain their titles in the main single events. Ouschan was the only of last year's champions to win a gold medal this year. The 2007 9-ball champion came out on top in 8-ball.

Ouschan's victim in the 8-ball final, Line Kjørsvik, was one of two players to reach two finals. Kjørsvik also finished runner-up in 14.1. Zoran Svilar from Serbia won silver in both 9-ball and 8-ball.

This was Ouschan's sixth euro gold, and second in 8-ball. Tahti also had five previous wins. Chamat, Dederding and Sørensen all won for the second time.

This championship marked the 30th anniversary of the EPBF and therefore contained all categories and disciplines. There were also events for Seniors, Ladies, Juniors, Boys and Girls.

The event was held August 7-16, 2008 at the Sauerland Sterner Hotel, Willingen, Germany.

Kelly Fisher captures maiden US Open title

2008 WBPA US OpenEngland's Kelly Fisher avenged last year's final loss and won her first WPBA US Open title.

In the deciding match she defeated surprise finalist Filipino Iris Ranola 7-1. Jeanette Lee (USA) shared third place with Yu Ram Cha (South Korea).

Kelly Fisher took away $15,000 for first place. Ranola won $9,000 for her runner-up position.

This was Kelly's first US Open trophy. It was also her first Classic Tour victory of the season and fourth of her career. Her three previous wins all came in the San Diego Classic.

Allison Fisher (England) came into the event as the three-time defending champion. This year was a completely different story though as she went out early after losing her first two matches.

The win puts Kelly atop the WPBA rankings. She started the week at No.5. Karen Corr (Ireland) is still in second place and Xiaoting Pan (China) drops from shared second to third. Allison Fisher drops all the way from first to sixth.

The event took place from July 1 to August 3 in the Riverwind Casino, Norman, Oklahoma, USA. It was the fourth of seven this season on the Classic Tour. Next up is the Carolina Classic, September 10-14, in Durham, North Carolina.

Pagulayan rules in Singapore leg of Asian Tour

Alex Pagulayan from the Philippines won the Singapore leg of the Guinness Asian 9-ball Tour.

In the final he defeated countryman Dennis Orcollo 11-6.

Pagulayan received $15,000 for the win. Orcollo got $6,000 for second place.

The Taiwanese pair of Ching-shun Yang and Chia-ching Wu shared third place.

Pagulayan's win ended a terrific run for Jung-lin Chang (Taiwan). Before this event he had won all three events of the current season, four Tour events in a row and six of the last nine.

The popular Filipino moves up to sixth place in the ranking list with this win. Yang stays in second. Chang is a clear leader, with Wu and Joven Bustamente (Philippines) in third place.

The competition was held July 25-27, 2008 at the Velocity Sports Mall in Singapore. This was the fourth of six events on the 2008 Guinness 9 Ball Tour. Next stop is in Guangzhou, China from 19-21 September. The last is the Grand Final in Jakarta which is comprised of the top 10 in the overall Order of Merit.

Russell takes ninth world title in English Billiards

Mike Russell from England won the 2008 World Billiards Championship.

2006 champion Geet Sethi from India took silver after losing 1821-1342 in the final. Last year's runner-up Chris Shutt (England) and David Causier (England) finished joint third.

Just like last year Russell had the two highest breaks in the event; a 588 and a 272.

He has now won a record nine world pro titles; 1989, 1991, 1996, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007 and 2008. Some say it is ten since his name was also engraved on the trophy in 2000, even though there was no world championship that year.

Update: Billy has informed me that Mike's name now has been removed from the trophy for 2000.

The championship was held July 23-27, 2008 at the Northern Snooker Centre, Leeds, England.

Forthomme cruises to victory in Sang Lee International Open

Roland Forthomme from Belgium won the Sang Lee International Open.

In the all-Belgian final Forthomme defeated two-time defending champion Frédéric Caudron 50-41. Sweden's Torbjörn Blomdahl beat Martin Horn (Germany) to claim third place.

Forthomme received $25,000 for the win. Caudron earned $15,000 and Blomdahl $12,000.

A great number of players had runs of 13 to tie for the highest run of the event. Caudron had the best single game average of 2,778. He achieved that in a high-class 50-49 quarter-final win over Semih Sayginer (Turkey).

The event took place in Carom Café Billiards, New York, USA, July 20-27, 2008. A total of 85 players took part.

Potts and Horsburgh shine in the World Eightball Pool Championships

2008 World Eightball Pool ChampionshipsGareth Potts (England) and Lynette Horsburgh (Scotland) came out on top in the Foster's World Eightball Pool Championships.

Potts beat Jason Twist (England) 11-4 in the men's final. In the semi-finals they both won in deciding games, against the Englishmen Adam Davis and Gareth Hibbott.

This was Potts' second title in a row and third overall. He also won in 2005. In addition he won the junior championship in 2000.

Lynette Horsburgh (Scotland) defeated England's Barbara Taylor 8-6 in the women's final.

The losing semifinalists Sue Thompson and Emma Cunningham (both England) had contested the last four finals, with Cunningham tasting victory in 2005. Thompson had reached the final in each of her previous 13 attempts.

Horsburgh is best known for her snooker skills and has a runner-up finish in the 2005 World Ladies Snooker Championship as her best result.

Paul Maguire (England) won the Junior title and Tony Southern (England) successfully defended his title in the wheelchair division. There were also a number of other events, including teams, Under 21s and Over 50s.

The tournament took place at the Imperial Hotel in Blackpool, England, 29 June - 10 July.

In the version of pool or Eight Ball played in the United Kingdom and Australia, plain unnumbered red balls and yellow balls often replace the solid and striped balls. If not, the terms "bigs" (9-15) and "smalls" (1-7) are generally used instead. The black ball, however, still typically bears a number eight. Another difference is that the UK table has pockets just larger than the balls, whereas the American table has pockets significantly larger.

Jaspers wins Porto World Cup

Dick Jaspers from Netherlands won the three cushion World Cup event in Porto, Portugal.

In the final he defeated Daniel Sanchez (Spain) 3-1 (10-15, 15-1, 15-14, 15-5).Tying for third were defending champion Torbjörn Blomdahl (Sweden) and Kyung-Roul Kim from South Korea. That's a repeat of their positions in the previous World Cup event, in Sluiskil.

Frédéric Caudron (Belgium) had the highest general average of 2.109 while Sanchez had the highest single match average of 2.647. Eddy Leppens (Belgium) had the highest run of the event with 13.

This was Jaspers' 15th World Cup win but his first since the 2006 Sluiskil World Cup.

The win takes Jaspers from 17th to second in the World Cup Ranking. Sanchez advanced from ninth to fifth. Caudron stays on top and Blomdahl and Kim are still sharing third place.

There are no changes in the top five in the World Players Ranking. Blomdahl is on top, followed by Caudron, Jaspers, Sanchez and Roland Forthomme (Belgium).

The event took place 30 June - 6 July 2008, in the Centro de Congressos Matosinhos, Porto, Portugal. It was the second of six events in the 2008 World Cup. Next event is in Irapuato, Mexico, 25-31 August.

Allison Fisher claims third Great Lakes Classic title

Allison Fisher from England won the Great Lakes Classic.

In the final she came back from 2-0 down to defeat countrywoman Kelly Fisher 7-4.

Karen Corr (Ireland) and Sarah Ellerby (England) shared third, completing a clean sweep for the European contingent.

This was Allison Fisher's second title of 2008, her third Great Lakes Classic championship and her 53rd title on the Classic Tour.

The defending champion Xiaoting Pan from China was edged 9-8 by Kelly Fisher in the quarter-finals.

This win solidified Allison Fisher's No.1 position in the WPBA Rankings. Kelly Fisher improved from seventh to 5th. Corr jumped from fifth to second. She shares that place with Ga Young Kim (South Korea) and Pan.

The event is scheduled to be shown on ESPN 4 August from 8-11PM EST.

The event took place June 25-29, 2008 at the Blue Chip Casino, Michigan City, Indiana, USA. It was the third of ten events on the 2008 Classic Tour. Next up is the US Open, at the Riverwind Casino, Norman, Oklahoma, July 30 - August 3 2008.
