Souquet wins World 8-ball Championship

World 8-ball Pool ChampionshipRalf Souquet from Germany won the World 8-ball Pool Championship in Fujairah.

In the final he defeated defending champion Ronato Alcano from Philippines 13-9 to claim the $60,000 winner's cheque. Alcano's runner-up place earned him $20,000.

Souquet played close to perfect against Alcano. He didn't miss a pot in the entire match. Apart from four dry breaks he ran out every time he came to the table.

Souquet beat Marcus Chamat (Sweden) 10-8 in the semi-finals and Alcano edged fellow Filipino and last year's runner-up Dennis Orcollo 10-9.

The final was a repeat of the 2006 World 9-Ball final. On that occasion Alcano came out on top.

Souquet continued the trend of 9-ball world champions succeeding in 8-ball. All the four 8-ball world champions have previously won the world 9-ball title. Souquet won the 9-ball crown in 1996. The others to complete the double are Alcano, Efren Reyes (Philippines) and Chia-Ching Wu (Taiwan).

The tournament was played 18-25 April 2008 at the Expo Center Fujairah, Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.
