Russell wins record eighth World Billiards Championship

Mike Russell from England won the 2007 World Billiards Championship.

Fellow Englishman Chris Shutt from England took silver after losing 2166-1710 in the final. Defending champion Geet Sethi (India) and David Causier (England) finished joint third.

Russell had the two highest breaks in the event; a 494 and a 482.

He has now won a record eight world pro titles; 1989, 1991, 1996, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2004 and 2007. Some say it is nine since his name was also engraved on the trophy in 2000, even though there was no world championship that year

The championship was held July 18-22 at the Northern Snooker Centre, Leeds, England.

Yang wins No.2 at Singapore stop of the Asian Tour

Taiwan's Ching-Shun Yang won the Singapore leg of the Guinness Asian 9-ball Tour.

In the final he beat Malaysia's Ibrahim Amir 11-8 to claim the $15,000 first prize. Alex Pagulayan (Philippines) and Chia-Ching Wu (Taiwan) shared third place.

Yang also won the Kaohsiung event earlier in the season.

With this win Yang moves to the top of the Order of Merit. Fellow Taiwanese Jung-Lin Chang is only five points back in second.

The top 10 finishers in the Order of Merit will earn spots in the 2007 World Pool Championship.

The event was held July 13-15 at the Orchid Country Club, Singapore. It was the fourth event of six this season. Next stop is Shanghai, China on August 3-5.

Ortmann bags World Straight Pool Championship

2007 World Straight Pool ChampionshipGermany's Oliver Ortmann won the World Straight Pool Championship.

In a tight final he beat surprise package Huidji See (Netherlands) 200-171. The losing semifinalists were Martin Kempter (Austria) and Danny Harriman (USA).

This was the German's second world title. In 1995 he won the World 9-ball Championship. In straight pool he has won five European titles (1987, 1989, 1990, 2000 and 2006).

Ortmann took home $12,500 for the win. See got $5,500 for his second place finish.

Defending champion Thorsten Hohmann (Germany) lost 200-171 to Kempter in the quarter-finals.

Kempter earnt $5,000 for posting the highest run of the event, a 160 clearance against Dennis Hatch (USA). That's just 14 points less than Hohmann's 174 run from last year and only 22 behind Joe Procita's record for tournament play. Here are the top four runs from the event:

There were three women in the 64-player field; Jasmin Ouschan (Austria), and the Korean Cho sisters Bo Ram and Yu-Ram. Ouschan proved that last year's fifth place finish was no fluke by posting an impressive ninth place. The Chos failed to advance from the group stage with 2-5 records.

Word is that matches will be aired online for free at www.dragonpromotions.com in the end of the month (July) and later aired on www.propoolvideo.com.

The event was held July 9-14 at the Hilton Hotel in East Brunswick, New Jersey, USA.

Thompson and Potts crowned world eightball pool champions

World Eightball Pool ChampionshipWorld Eightball Pool ChampionshipSue Thompson (Scotland) and Gareth Potts (England) won the World Eightball Pool Championship.

Thompson, who now has a record eight world titles, defeated Northern Ireland's Emma Cunningham 8-3 in the deciding match. These two players have contested the last four finals, with Cunningham tasting victory in 2005. Thompson has reached the final in each of her 13 attempts.

Potts beat Mick Hill (England) 11-4 in the men's final. This was Potts' second world title. He also won in 2005. In 2000 he won the junior championship.

Sean Conway (Ireland) won the Junior title and Tony Southern (England) came out on top of the wheelchair division. There were also a host of other events, including teams.

The tournament took place in Blackpool, England, 2nd-12th July.

In the version of pool or Eight Ball played in the United Kingdom and Australia, plain unnumbered red balls and yellow balls often replace the solid and striped balls. If not, the terms "bigs" (9-15) and "smalls" (1-7) are generally used instead. The black ball, however, still typically bears a number eight. Another difference is that the UK table has pockets just larger than the balls, whereas the American table has pockets significantly larger.

Allison Fisher takes Florida Classic title

Allison Fisher came out on top in the Florida Classic.

Fisher from England defeated South Korea's Ga-Young Kim 7-4 in the final. Melissa Herndon (USA) and Xiaoting Pan (China) finished joint third.

This was her first WPBA win of the season and the 55th title of her career.

The victory solidifies Fisher's top position in the WPBA Rankings. Karen Corr (Ireland) hangs on to second place and Pan stays in third.

The event took place from June 27 - July 1 at the Seminole Hard Rock Casino, Hollywood, Florida, USA. This was the fifth event of eight in the WPBA season. Next up is the US Open, August 1-5.

Third win of the season for Blomdahl in Porto


Legendary Swede Torbjörn Blomdahl won the three cushion World Cup event in Porto, Portugal.

In the final he overwhelmed Roland Forthomme (Belgium) 3-0 (15-5, 15-1, 15-3).

Filipos Kasidokostas from Greece and Frédéric Caudron (Belgium) shared third spot.

Blomdahl has now won three out of four events this season and four of the last five overall.

The Swede also had the highest average in the tournament, with 2.153, and the highest run of 13. He also shared the highest single match average (2.647), with Kyung-Roul Kim (South Korea).

The win strengthens Blomdahl's position atop the World Cup Ranking. Caudron stays in second. Forthomme moves to No.3, tied with Daniel Sanchez (Spain) and Dick Jaspers (Netherlands).

Blomdahl also is the new leader in the World Players Ranking. Sanchez drops to second, with Caudron in third.

The event took place June 25 - July 1 2007, at the Centro de Congressos Matosinos, Porto, Portugal. It was the fourth event of seven in the 2007 World Cup. The next leg is in Hurghada, Egypt, August 27 - September 1.
