Engert wins Germany Open for ninth Euro Tour title

Germany's own Thomas Engert captured his ninth Euro Tour title by winning the Dynamic Germany Open.

In the final the eight-time European champion trounced Italy's Fabio Petroni 9-1 to win €6000. Petroni received €3800 for his runner-up finish.

In the semi-finals Engert defeated Karl Boyes (England) 9-3 while Petroni bested Finlands's Markus Juva 9-7.

This was Engert's ninth tournament win on the Euro Tour. He has previously won the 1992 Dutch Open, 1992 Hungarian Open, 1994 Germany Open, 1996 Netherlands Open, 1997 Spain Open, 1998 Polen Open, 2004 Italy Open and 2005 Swiss Open. Only his fellow Germans Ralf Souquet and Oliver Ortmann have more wins, with 13 each. The 35 wins means the German trio has won 37.6% of the 93 Euro Tour events contested.

Engert's only loss in the event came against Austria's Jasmin Ouschan. She was eventually beaten 9-6 by Gabriele Cimmino (Italy) in the last 32. Defending champion, England's world champion Daryl Peach lost 9-6 to Engert at the same stage.

The win takes Engert all the way from 11th to second in the Euro Tour Ranking. Losing finalist Petroni moves from 37th to 20th. Ouschan is the top female on the list, improving from 106th to 66th. Mark Gray (England) once again holds on to the top position. Former snooker great Tony Drago (Malta) drops from second to third.

The tournament was played 22-24 May at Billiardcenter "Die Drei", Sindelfingen, Germany. It was the third event of seven on the 2008 Euro Tour. The next stop is the Dynamic Austrian Open which runs from 12-14 June, 2008.

Reanne Evans captures fourth straight World Ladies Snooker Championship

England's Reanne Evans won the World Ladies Snooker Championship for a record fourth consecutive time.

In the final she beat compatriot Emma Banks 5-3 to pocket the £700 winner's cheque.

Evans also recorded the highest break in the event, a 102 in the group stages.

It was the record fourth world title in a row for Evans. In 2005 she defeated Lynette Horsburgh (Scotland) 6-1, in 2006 she beat Emma Bonney (England) 5-3 and last year she won 5-3 over Katie Henrick (England).

Chris Sharpe (England) beat Malgorzata Sikorska (Poland) 3-1 in the seniors final and 11-year-old Hannah Jones (England) defeated Joanne Davies (England) in the juniors final.

Jaique Ip Wan In (Netherlands) and Pam Wood (England) beat Sharpe and Laura Alves (Ireland) 2-1 in the ladies doubles.

In the final of the english billiards event Emma Bonney (England) beat Ewa Palmius (Sweden) 216-119.

This championship is organized by the World Ladies Snooker & Billiards Association. It must not be confused with the IBSF World Championship. Evans is a also the defending champion in that event.

The tournament was played at the Cambridge Snooker Centre, England, 3-8 May, 2008.

Ronnie O'Sullivan wins third World Snooker Championship

Ronnie O'Sullivan (England) won the 888.Com World Snooker Championship.

In the final he beat tournament surprise Allister Carter (also England) 18-8 to win the trophy and £250,000.

To reach the final O'Sullivan had to beat Liu Chuang (China), Mark J Williams (Wales), Liang Wenbo (China) and Stephen Hendry (Scotland)

This was the third world trophy for O'Sullivan. He also won the championship in 2001 and 2004. In total he's won 20 ranking events.

Defending champion John Higgins (Scotland) lost 13-9 to Ryan Day (Wales) in the second round.

O'Sullivan and Carter both made 147s in the tournament. They therefore had to share the £157,000 jackpot. In total there were 63 centuries in the event.

It was O'Sullivan's record ninth maximum in major competition. Stephen Hendry (Scotland) has eight.

With this win O'Sullivan moves from fifth to first in the new world rankings. Scotland's Stephen Maguire jumps from 10th to second and Shaun Murphy from England stays in third.

Carter's runner-up position takes him to No. 7. Mark Allen from Northern Ireland is the only first-timer in the top 16. 50-year-old Steve Davis (England), Mark J Williams and Ken Doherty (Ireland) are the most prominent names to lose their place in that elite group.

The event took place Apr 18 - May 5 at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield, England. It was the last of seven events on the 2007/2008 Main Tour.

Souquet wins World 8-ball Championship

World 8-ball Pool ChampionshipRalf Souquet from Germany won the World 8-ball Pool Championship in Fujairah.

In the final he defeated defending champion Ronato Alcano from Philippines 13-9 to claim the $60,000 winner's cheque. Alcano's runner-up place earned him $20,000.

Souquet played close to perfect against Alcano. He didn't miss a pot in the entire match. Apart from four dry breaks he ran out every time he came to the table.

Souquet beat Marcus Chamat (Sweden) 10-8 in the semi-finals and Alcano edged fellow Filipino and last year's runner-up Dennis Orcollo 10-9.

The final was a repeat of the 2006 World 9-Ball final. On that occasion Alcano came out on top.

Souquet continued the trend of 9-ball world champions succeeding in 8-ball. All the four 8-ball world champions have previously won the world 9-ball title. Souquet won the 9-ball crown in 1996. The others to complete the double are Alcano, Efren Reyes (Philippines) and Chia-Ching Wu (Taiwan).

The tournament was played 18-25 April 2008 at the Expo Center Fujairah, Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.

Allison Fisher wins San Diego Classic

Allison Fisher from England won the WPBA San Diego Classic to kick off the 2008 Classic Tour.

In the final she defeated Gerda Hofstätter (Austria) 7-4. Ga Young Kim (South Korea) and Karen Corr (Ireland) finished joint third.

Three-time defending champion Kelly Fisher (England) lost 9-6 to Hofstätter in the quarter-finals.

This was Fisher's 52nd title on the Classic Tour.

In this year's rankings all players start off with zero points. Therefore Fisher is the first leader in the rankings. She ended up on top of the list last season.

The event took place from 9-13 April at the Viejas Casino, Alpine, California. It was the first of ten events on the 2008 Classic Tour. Next up is the Great Lakes Classic, at the Blue Chip Casino, Michigan City, Indiana, 25-29 June 2008.

Darren Appleton captures Italy Open

Darren Appleton continued England's recent dominance on the Euro Tour by winning the Dynamic Italy Open.

In the final the former UK eightball player defeated home favourite Bruno Muratore 9-2 to win €6000. Muratore took home €3800 as runner-up.

In the semi-finals Appleton defeated countryman Mark Gray 9-6 and Muratore defeated Austria's Martin Kempter 9-2.

This was Appleton's first final appearance on the Euro Tour. He must enjoy this place as his previous best finish, tied third, was in last year's edition of the event.

Defending champion Christian Reimering (Germany) lost 9-8 to Muratore in the round of 32.

The win takes Appleton from 30th to 17th in the Euro Tour Ranking. Losing finalist Muratore stays in third. Mark Gray (England) holds on to the top position. Tony Drago (Malta) improves from fifth to second.

The tournament was played 10-12 April at the Holiday Inn Resort, Castel Voturno, Italy. It was the second event of seven on the 2008 Euro Tour. The next stop is the Dynamic German Open which runs from 22-24 May, 2008.

Yuan-Chun Lin wins Women's World 9-ball Championship


Yuan-Chun Lin from Taiwan won the Women's World 9-Ball Championship.

In the final she defeated two-time winner Ga Young Kim (South Korea) 11-7 to grab the $20,000 first prize. Kim got $10,000 as runner-up.

Lin defeated England's three-time world champion Allison Fisher 9-8 in the semi-finals, after Fisher missed the nine leading 8-7. Kim beat Jasmin Ouschan (Austria) 9-6 from 6-3 down.

Last year's champion Xiaoting Pang (China) was denied her chance to defend the title after not getting her visa on time.

Lin's greatest result before this win was first place in the 2006 Asian Games.

The tournament ran from April 3-6, 2008, at the Cuemaster Pool Club, in Taipei City, Taiwan.

It's Chang again in Penang's Asian Tour event

Taiwan's Jung-Lin Chang won his third title in a row by taking the Penang leg of the Guinness Asian 9-ball Tour.

In the final he beat compatriot Hung-Hsiang Wang 11-7.

The event was totally dominated by the Asian island nation. In the semifinals Chang defeated former world champion Chia-Ching Wu and Wang beat Chin-Shun Yang.

Chang received $15,000 for the win. Wang got $6,000 for second place.

The talented Chang is on a terrific run. He has now won three Tour events in a row and five of the last eight, including last year's Malaysia event.

He of course heads the ranking list. Joven Bustamente (Philippines) and Yang shares second place. Wu and Wang lies in joint fourth.

The competition was held April 4-6 at the G Hotel, Penang, Malaysia. The tour stays in Malaysia. Next stop is in Genting on 30 May - June 1. There are a total of six events in the Tour. The last is the Grand Final in Jakarta which is comprised of the top 10 in the overall Order of Merit.
